Syrian Mary - Vivienne Dadour with Ludwig El Haddad

16 November 2025
Syrian Mary - Vivienne Dadour with Ludwig El Haddad

Syrian Mary Make No Delay: Decolonising the Silences is an on-going, research-based visual art project led by artist Vivienne Dadour with Ludwig El Haddad.

The project explores the life of Vivienne’s remarkable ancestor Syrian Mary, a migrant from Syria/ Lebanon who worked as a hawker of haberdashery between 1890 and 1920, who travelled from Redfern to remote farms in the Lithgow, Bathurst, and Mudgee Shires, NSW. Syrian Mary experienced marginalisation and enforced silence within the predominantly Anglo-Celtic society of nineteenth-century Australia.

Through a combination of historical research, forensic fieldwork, and personal narratives, Vivienne and Ludwig present their work in progress, encouraging open dialogue and critical reflection on the ‘silences’ inherent in Australia’s colonial and contemporary history.
